The migration initiative involves extracting data, transforming data and loading data.

• Premigration planning. Evaluate the data being moved for stability.
• Project initiation. Identify and brief key stakeholders.
• Landscape analysis. Establish a robust data quality rules management process and brief the business on the goals of the project, including shutting down legacy systems.
• Solution design. Determine what data to move, and the quality of that data before and after the move.
• Build & test. Code the migration logic and test the migration with a mirror of the production environment.
• Execute & validate. Demonstrate that the migration has complied with requirements and that the data moved is viable for business use.
• Decommission & monitor. Shut down and dispose of old systems.

Project Summary

Provided planning and implementation services for enterprise level Encryption Key Management Systems that included over 200 appliances throughout the VA network infrastructure.

Setup and administered the full lifecycle of cryptographic keys. This includes: generating, using, storing, archiving, and deleting of keys. Protection of the encryption keys includes limiting access to the keys physically, logically, and through user/role access.

Business Impact

This initiative was part of a federal mandate to enhance protection of Veterans Health Information. The system assures compliancy for an independent platform to manage vital encryption keys.

Encryption key management is crucial to preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information—if keys are compromised, entire systems and data can be compromised and rendered unusable.
